About

“That’s what fiction is for. It’s for getting at the truth when the truth isn’t sufficient for the truth.” – Tim O’Brian

Story is fascinating. From the oral traditions of thousands of years ago to the expanse of information on the internet, story has always been a powerful medium. For perhaps several hundred pages, we live the lives of characters and are exposed. The world looks different and familiar all at the same time. Through events unfolding on a page, we see things we have never seen. We meet people we have never met and we feel. We are reminded that regardless of our differences, we are bound by emotion. Loss, rejection, fear, love, friendship. And emotion can translate into sympathy or even empathy. Understanding or feeling the pain of a fellow human being, albeit imaginary, alters our perspective. No longer is there “they” and “me.” Our differences, once the chasm that stood between us, become secondary to the common emotions shared by all humanity.

It may start as fiction, but it must finish in the deep places of the heart. It must be true. Maybe not in events but in emotion.

Fictional stories. Real emotion.
